A degree is just proof that you've put in the work to learn the craft. The low barrier to entry in this field is a double edged sword. On one side, it's great because anyone can become a designer with enough hard work. On the other side, we see a lot of people calling themselves designers with "years of experience" when that "experience" is reading a UX article or two whenever they were particularly unhappy with their current job. Hiring managers used to have trouble with identifying good UX talent years ago, but they're getting better and people who don't actually know the craft are slowly getting weeded out. If you've been working as a designer already, you've learned that eventually people stop asking where you went to school and only asked you what projects you've worked on. So quit worrying if you studied the wrong thing or you discovered this awesome field too late in life. You still have time. You can still become a designer. You just need to learn the skills, demonstrate it with a solid portfolio, and interview without checking instagram.
