People opening with a range offer also ended up receiving higher final compensation. Sounds nice, right? But how do you work out the optimal salary range for yourself? Well, you start with your ideal salary. Let's say it's $55, 000 — a reasonable number you can expect to get paid in your industry, based on your qualifications. Here's how to put it in a solid range: Don't use backdown range (e. g. $48, 000-$55, 000). In such cases, you are less likely to arrive at your final figure. Start a moderate rather than extreme point. (e. $63, 000-$75, 000 for a job that pays about $55, 000 will likely work). Avoid extreme width in your ranges. aiming between $50, 000-$80, 000) will show that you lack actual market data. Many people avoid salary negotiations because they don't want to appear too pushy or greedy. Granted, the same research has you covered here too. If you want to leave a good impression with the other party you are negotiating with, use a relatively narrow bracketing range (e. $52, 000-$57, 000 for a $55K job).

1. Research companies within your field of interest or industry. See how they're performing and what others are saying about them. Do you want to go to a larger or smaller company? Both have pluses and minuses. 2. Talk to existing employees in the same field as you and get their feedback on some of your target companies. 3. If there are negatives in your current position or company that you would like to change or leave behind, use those areas as your primary baseline when doing research. 4. Based upon your skill set, determine if another company could offer you exposure in an area that you may not get at your existing company. 5. Do a self assessment: Are you sufficiently challenged or just coasting along? Is your career transitioning as you had planned, or, are there other areas you'd like to explore that currently may not be offered to you? 6. Explore the potential drawbacks of leaving your existing company? (401K vesting, stock, promotion)? Is it enough to keep you there or are there other non-tangibles that you would consider of value at another company that would offset potential financial disparity?
Hello Red Hatters, I'm about to receive an offer from red hat for an application development consultant. I'm very excited about this opportunity but also a little nervous. I have been working as a java Software Engineer for 3 years where the last year or so I have acted as a team lead. I also have 10+ years working with Linux and have been a fan of red hat since I was in my late teens. My eventual goal is to move into working on the kernel or other lower parts of distributed computer systems. I'm looking at this consultant job as a very exciting stepping stone with the eventual goal of moving into the engineering department after I complete my Master's which is focused on distributed systems, networking, and computer architecture. I guess where I am a little nervous is I want to make sure I will be able to continue to write large amounts of code while being an application consultant. The guys I have talked to have indicated that I will be writing a lot of code and the interview was relatively technical, but I wanted to hear from the community to get some more insight.
Concentrate on remembering what message you are conveying and how you come across. Athena51 Sat 05-Jan-19 13:56:32 A few years back every interview wanted a PowerPoint presentation but I never see it now - it seems to have fallen out of fashion. They want to see how well you can put information across without relying on bells and whistles I expect. When I've had to do this, I've had some notes with my main points which I've given to the panel after I've finished my presentation (don't do it before as people just read the notes or slides and don't listen) and then talked in as engaging and lively a manner as possible. For my last interview I had to do a (previously unseen) case study and then present my findings to them and answer questions for the first 10 minutes of the interview without any aids. It was fine and I got the job Practising is good. My Dcat has heard all of my presentations, training sessions, webinars etc - he's a great audience....
