However, there should be an openness in conversation that promotes trust and communication from the subject so that the interviewer can glean facts about the probationer's life and thought processes that affect his actions. Similar a therapist, the probation officer maintains an objective distance while encouraging open sharing of personal details. With a good rapport, an officer can encourage the probationer to share more information about his life and views and can make an informed decision on the best community involvement or therapeutic procedures and the extent of the supervision that the offender requires.
