The conflation of (basically open borders) and (welfare state) means that the UK is functionally paying people to immigrate there. And the pay is apparently very large. By her words, she was working an upper middle class job in the UK, paying 50% taxes, and living next to a Czech lady and her four kids that didn't work at all, and the Czech lady had a higher standard of living being purely on the dole. I don't know how embellished this story was, but that was how she relayed it. When I told this story to blue tribe friends of mine, their response was, "well then why didn't she quit her job and live on the dole? " and my obvious response was, "she decided to move to the USA instead, and get paid for her work. " So this dialogue invokes two things from me. First, I'm curious if anyone here from the UK can fact check that position, particularly someone who's in the (Leave) camp. Secondly, the dialogue has formed a general argument architecture in my head that looks something like this: There is a humanitarian case for open borders, which could be argued.
(The degree must be obtained before the beginning of the contract but you can apply before. )
In the end my choice was between a PhD at my undergraduate institution, and admission the English school with no financial assistance. Because of COVID (and money, like always), I went with the PhD. I am in my first semester and the feelings of inadequacy get worse every week. I am still trying as hard as I can, but I feel like I am at an insurmountable disadvantage in my position and that a career in academia is completely doomed. Conversations like this recent one in r/math (which I frequent) constantly reinforce the idea that I am on a sinking ship. I love teaching and I love researching; a professorship is an absolute dream job for me. However, the ratio of applicants to job openings is not in my favor, and I am nowhere near the top of the résumé pile. I really want to believe that school names don't matter, that your advisor doesn't make or break your career, etc., and that your own merit is almost all that shines through, but I have never ONCE seen evidence for this after reading hundreds and hundreds of stories.
