Youth are recruited through local schools, YouthSource Centers, the Community College district, and community organizations. In preparation for job placement, participants are given the opportunity to earn a Work Readiness Certificate endorsed by the LA Area Chamber of Commerce, the City Workforce Development Board, and the Professionals in Human Resources Association (PIHRA). They also are offered financial literacy training during their program enrollment. How Can I Participate? As one of his first promises in office, Mayor Eric Garcetti pledged to offer 10, 000 jobs to eligible youth in the summer of 2014. The Mayor's Fund for Los Angeles provided critical support, working with the City Employment & Workforce Development Department to coordinate private contributions and public resources. That effort helped HIRE LA's Youth double the previous summer's record, giving thousands of young people a chance to work. HIRE LA's Youth offers students and young adults between the ages of 14 and 24 job training, workforce skills development, and employment opportunities within the private sector. HIRE LA's Youth gives many of its participants their first exposure to a formal work environment. Summer employment means positive activity while students are out of school and lots of valuable work experience for the future.
